The Section of Blood Bank and Transfusion Service provides the patients of KFSHD with safe and high-quality blood products.

    The section consists of two branches: The Blood Bank & Apheresis Unit and the Transfusion Service.

    The Blood Bank & Aphaeresis unit is concerned with all duties related to recruitment, collection, preparation and testing of blood and blood products. The blood bank is located in the ground floor of 3E building. The blood supplies are provided through on-site whole blood donation and platelet apheresis as well as through mobile whole blood donation campaigns which are organized through collaboration with many government and private sector organizations. The collections are performed by well trained technical and nursing staff supervised by an experienced blood bank physician.

    The operating hours for on-site donation are Saturday to Thursday 7:30 till 16:30 Along with collection of platelets, the apheresis unit is also responsible for performing therapeutic apheresis procedures. Currently we perform plasma exchange; other procedures such as red cell exchange and cytoreduction are in the preparation phase.

    The Transfusion service is responsible for performing patient testing, selection and releasing of the most suitable blood and blood products to match the patient's needs. Testing is performed by well trained technologists; a certified Hematopathologist oversees the operation and provide consultations and clinical liaison. The transfusion service is located in the main laboratory area in the ground floor of the main hospital. The transfusion service is open 24 hours.

    The section is staffed by pathologists, technical and nursing staff to perform the wide spectrum of services and duties.

    The blood bank is in constant need for different blood products in all blood groups. We encourage everyone to visit us and be a blood or platelet donor.
