About 60% of all cancer patients will require radiation therapy during their course
of treatment. The Department of Radiation Oncology at King Fahad Specialist Hospital
provides comprehensive radiotherapy treatment facilities to such patients, especially
hailing from the Eastern Province, with a humanitarian touch .
The department has an array of modern radiotherapy gadgets ranging from multi-leaf collimated linear
accelerators, a digital treatment simulator, and latest treatment planning system,
all interlinked through an effective radiation oncology information system that
makes the workflow efficient and error free. Patients are treated by low and high
energy photons as well as a range of electron energies. The department has recently
added a wide bore CT-simulator and a high dose rate remote afterloading brachytherapy
unit.
Recently the department commissioned intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
feature making the KFSH the only Ministry of Health hospital offering this feature
in this region. It is now possible to deliver high radiation doses to target volumes
without damaging normal tissues. Radiation Oncology services for pediatric patients
under anesthesia have also been implemented.
A strong quality assurance program built on a wide variety of physics equipments ensures that treatments are delivered in accurate manner.
The department runs ten (10) outpatient clinics every week together with daily review clinics for the patients undergoing radiotherapy.
