Since the reign of the founder of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , the late King Abdulaziz Al Saud , may Allah  rest his soul , and throughout all eras of the lineage of his sons who succeeded him on the throne up to the current prosperous era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud , and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince , and His Royal Highness Deputy Crown Prince , and by the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Naif , Governor of Eastern Province , and His Excellency, Minister of Health and His Excellency Vice Minister of Health , Health Services received great care and utmost priority. Such care was demonstrated in the visionary development plans that affected all aspects of life in the Kingdom. Healthcare in particular, one of the oldest public affairs was profoundly impacted to the extent that the level of service in the Kingdom is now comparable to that of developed countries.

Health services in Saudi Arabia have experienced a quantum leap -in quality and quantity- in all preventive, therapeutic, diagnostic and rehabilitative levels, by the testimony of experts and concerned parties at local and international levels. The Kingdom is now ranked on par with developed countries in terms of the advanced levels of medical care systems and methods of delivering health services. Statistics are available to show the amount of development that occurred in the health services sector at all levels, as a result of the significant achievements that took place in healthcare facilities across the Kingdom.

As Saudis, we are entitled to be proud of the generous support and tremendous efforts exerted by our wise government in health care services for citizens of this dear homeland.

Proceeding from our firm belief in the need to strengthen the partnership , which should be enhanced among all government and private sectors , and persistent keenness on activating capabilities , promoting experiences and sharing of expertise , we will inevitably reinforce the pace of productive cooperation that ultimately focus on a mission with the clear goal of providing compassionate quality healthcare integrated with education and research. Our mission , from this standpoint , is similar to the moonlight ; it illuminates the pathway for us to march until we get to the true vision for achieving standards of corporate governance and affirmation of principle of transparency and credibility to be always and forever the leading center of excellence in specialized healthcare.

Now, our hospital is celebrating 10 years of service. It was an exceptional and challenging journey ranging between originality of the past and creativity of the present. The journey witnessed a structured determination and inspired planning that made us look forward to the fulfillment of our future dream: King Khalid Medical City.
 
King Fahad Specialist Hospital - Dammam is a magnificent medical edifice that provides    specialized health service. Serving 4,650,183 inhabitants; representing 15.1% of the Kingdom's population. Construction of the hospital began in 1984 , completed in1999 and inaugurated in late 2005 under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques , the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud - may Allah rest his soul- where it was renamed at that time by a royal decree from The Gulf Hospital to   King Fahad Specialist Hospital - Dammam.

KFSH-D’s Executive Managements used to issue an annual report to display achievements, expansion projects, international accreditations and building strategies; the matter that faced so many challenges in terms of prioritization according to objectives and strategies that have been implemented each five years and approved in 2009. From this perspective, the first plan of strategic goals (2012 - 2016) was set to work on developing the quality of services and patient safety by focusing on performance standards, patient satisfaction, development of effective leadership methods and facilitated the development of workflow approaches and mechanisms to achieve the concept of organizational learning throughout the facility and development of means of communication and dialogue – where of much has been achieved. The plan of strategic goals for the next five years (2016 - 2020) is now underway.
     
We succeeded in maintaining the highest quality of healthcare being provided to patients.  As evidence, the hospital achieved re-accreditations from the year 2010 – 2015 in the following; Joint Commission of International Accreditation (JCIA), International Organization for Standardization - Quality Management System (ISO 27001), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), The College of American Pathologists (CAP), International Organization for Standardization – Security Management System (ISO 9001), American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics  (ASHI), Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AACME), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), American College of Radiology (ACR),The Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) 

No doubt that continued occupation of the first position in providing the best professional services and specialized healthcare is an obsession to all KFSH-D executives.  In order to maintain the position as the Pearl of Eastern Region, the hospital focuses on the following Centers of Excellence: Multi Organ Transplant Center, Oncology Center, Neurosciences Center and distinctive medical and surgical and services.

Multi Organ Transplant Center is ranked in the second place at the level of the Kingdom. It was established in 2008, and includes three major sections: Kidney and Pancreas Transplant, Liver Transplant and Transplant Surgery. Through this center, specialists have managed to conduct (674) kidney transplant, (99) liver transplant and (13) pancreas transplant operations.

Oncology Center was established in 2006 and started chemotherapy services in June 2007. It is the only oncology center for radiation treatment at the level of  Eastern Region ,as well as the fact that KFSH-D is the only hospital of the Ministry of Health that performs stem cell transplants, where the number of operations conducted from 2010 to 2015 has reached (181) transplants divided between (139) for adults and (42) for Pediatric. The center includes the following sections: Oncology, Hematology, Stem Cell Transplant (children and adults), Radiation Therapy and Palliative Therapy. Cancer Registration Unit was established in 2010 and succeeded in treatment of (12,398) cases from 2008 up to 2015.

Neurosciences Center was established in conjunction with the other specialties mentioned above and includes the following sections: Mental Health, Clinical Physiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spine Surgery, Neurosurgery and Neurology ( Adults and Children).  
Many advanced programs have been established, such as Integrated Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurological Autoimmune, Peripheral Neuromuscular diseases. This center is unique in the whole Middle East area , and has been treating sleep disorders, Neuro-oncology , Neurospasm , scoliosis surgery and epilepsy surgery since 2008 . The number of outpatient visits to the center amounted to approximately (109,284) visit from 2008 up to 2015.

KFSH-D provides high quality services in various specializations. This includes specialized medical imaging, accredited laboratory-based services and facilities, closed emergency and high quality surgical and medical specialist services since the start of clinical services in the hospital in 2005.

Scientific research is one of the most essential components of KFSH-D, through which several departments and committees has been established, such as  the Research Administration in 2009 and  Health Research Ethics Committee in 2010 and the American accreditation program to protect participants in clinical research commenced in 2014. The administration has been renamed to Research Executive Administration, King Khalid Medical City based on a decision from the Medical Cities and Specialized Hospitals Council in 2015.

In order to continue the march of progress and excellence , KFSH-D  is providing a Saudi competencies development program  , which aims to train and qualify newly Saudi graduates in their different fields of specialization to acquire the expertise required to efficiently practice a wide variety of jobs , such as nursing , health support services, pharmaceutical services, and various specialties of engineering management  .

Academic Affairs, Training and Scholarship Department seeks to build a solid foundation of distinctive plans and study programs to meet the requirements of academic standards through granting of training opportunities and higher academic degrees to physicians, medical service staff and administrators through local delegation and   scholarship abroad, in addition to Diploma and Master degree programs in Executive Master of Science for Heath Administration (EMSHA). The number of beneficiary doctors has now reached (395) Residents and (27) Fellows.

In keeping with the line of wide developments that took place in hospital infrastructure , several projects have been implemented , including replacement of central air-conditioning unit , ICU expansion project , Cyclotron expansion project , renovation of Emergency Department ,  expansion of the main lobby, expansion of Transplant and Oncology clinics and expansion of Diagnostic Radiology and MRI sections and radiation oncology.

The coming years will afford us the opportunity to continue to excel and ultimately achieve our vision of being the leading center of excellence in healthcare in this region.
